In June 2011, the California Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) began transitioning seniors and people with disabilities covered by Medi-Cal from fee-for-service to managed care.
The year-long process, which affects nearly 400,000 beneficiaries in 16 counties, is expected to expand access, increase care coordination, and improve health outcomes. The state also anticipates savings to the general fund.
CHCF hosted a briefing with authors of a study, to be published this summer, that examines the activities of health plans, providers, and consumer groups before and during this transition. The authors identified promising practices, common challenges, and lessons learned.
