A frost quake (cryoseism) is a seismic event that is weather related. It is caused by water freezing underground and building up so much pressure the the ground finally cracks along a fault line creating a very loud bang! The first time I heard one of these I thought someone shot a shotgun in the middle of the night in our front yard! If you look around as the snow melts, you will run across a few of them, but you need to do it quick because they occur in frozen dirt, and heal-up quickly usually leaving no trace.
The day I filmed this one, I actually found another a couple of hundred feet away. In order for this to happen you need the right conditions, and the conditions here are perfect — we can get temperature swings of 80℉ in one day! We hear these every year, but it is rare to find them as it is very cold and they are well hidden.
