This is a new upload of this magnificent performance of Donizetti's Maria Stuarda. A new upload, because the pitch of the audio recording was not correct ( thank you Chris!!!). I reduced it by 2,2%. Now the sound quality is optimal ! The recording was made in the public probably from a box near the stage. The voices are very clear and are not dominated by the orchestra .
Joan Sutherland and Huguette Tourangeau performed this opera for the very first time in San Francisco . Joan Sutherland vocally at her very top and Huguette Tourangeau very expressive, vocally sometimes uneasy. There was a run of 5 performances, the recording was made on the 27th of november 1971, which was the last one.
After San Francisco, they performed Stuarda in Philadelphia, Hartford, Las Palmas, Holland and London. Decca made a very fine recording with the same duo, assisted by Luciano Pavarotti. Richard Bonynge performed in San Francisco the overture, which he cut at other performances, because the happy tunes did not suit the drama very well!
