Inside the elbow lies the Ulnar Collateral Ligament, or UCL, a crucial ligament in complex movements of the arm. Baseball players make up the majority of patients suffering from UCL Injuries, as the motion required to throw an object overhand relies heavily on tensing the Ulnar Collateral Ligament.
When the ligament stretches, becomes frayed or torn beyond repair, patients may experience:
-Weakening grip strength.
-Elbow pain and stiffness.
-Numbness or tingling in the fingers and hand.
Surgeons may perform an Ulnar Collateral Ligament Reconstruction, also known as “Tommy John Surgery”. The procedure earned the peculiar name from the first baseball player to undergo the treatment in 1974, and has since been performed successfully on hundreds of patients and baseball players worldwide.
During the operation, the surgeon may perform an “Autograft” by harvesting a healthy length of Tendon from elsewhere in the patient's body, such as the wrist, a toe, or hamstring, and replaces the damaged portion of the UCL by anchoring the new tendon to the elbow bones through a small incision. Donor tissue known as an Allograft may also be used.
physicians will usually send Patients home in an arm brace the same day after receiving Tommy John Surgery, fully recovering in an average of 6 weeks.
