Disgraced South Carolina lawyer Alex Murdaugh was sentenced Friday to two life sentences without the possibility of parole, for the murders of his wife Maggie and 22-year-old son Paul. Murdaugh maintained his innocence during his sentencing hearing, saying, 'I’m innocent. I would never hurt my wife Maggie and I would never hurt my son 'Paw-Paw.'' Before giving his sentence, Judge Clifton Newman spoke of the drug addiction Murdaugh admitted to on the stand.
'It is also particularly troubling, Mr. Murdaugh, because as a member of the legal community ... We’ve seen each other at various occasions throughout the years,' Newman said during the hearing. ’It was especially heartbreaking for me to see you go in the media from being a grieving father who lost their wife and son to being a person indicted and convicted of killing them.'
