Heavy rain lashed several areas of Delhi on Saturday, causing waterlogging and traffic congestion in the city, parts of which were already facing issues due to flooding for the last few days. Despite a short but intense spell of rain on Saturday evening, the impact on the water levels in Yamuna was minimal. The Yamuna water is receding and its level constantly falling, giving the people of Delhi and its government a breather. But dark clouds are gathering elsewhere which might cast a shadow over the situation in Delhi.
The national capital is predicted to receive light to moderate showers on Sunday too. India Meteorological Department also predict that Delhi will likely receive light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms during the next 4-5 days. However, IMD has sounded an “orange” alert for Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh for Sunday. Nearby areas and key roads remain affected due to waterlogging in Delhi. The water level in Yamuna river was recorded at 206.02 mtrs on Sunday morning.
On a positive note, the situation improved on Sunday for the road from Majnu Ka Tila to Kashmere Gate as the water level in the Yamuna receded slowly. However, this area had previously experienced heavy water logging due to torrential rain. Delhi Traffic Police eased restrictions on a few stretches. However, because of waterlogging, some roads were still closed for traffic movement.Bhairon Marg, which was opened for traffic on Saturday evening, was again closed for traffic owing to the downpour.
Traffic was restricted on the Mathura Road carriageway. Vikas Marg, from ITO to Laxmi Nagar was opened as well, but the vehicles could only move in one lane since a major portion of the road remained flooded. The carriageway from ITO to Laxmi Nagar was also shut for traffic movement.Traffic Police advised commuters to avoid several waterlogged roads on Saturday night. The roads that were affected include Khan Market, Teen Murti roundabout, GGR-PDR, A-Point to W-Point, Kamla Express Building, Andrews Ganj, Khanpur T-point, and Under Railway Bridge at Bhairon Marg.
