#MillionDollarHighway aka US 550 from Durango, Colorado to Ouray, Colorado is part of the San Juan Skyway and is a stretch known as the Million Dollar Highway and is a favorite road for Moto Oz Beat the Heat tours. My review or impression US 550 is that it is a great road, but it is dangerous so be careful. The Million Dollar Highway goes over three major mountain passes, Coal Bank Pass, Molass Pass and Red Mountain Pass. Coal Bank Pass has an elevation of 10,640 ft, Molass Pass has an elevation of 10,910 and Red Mountain Pass has an elevation of 11,017. The town of Silverton, Colorado is between Durango and Ouray on US 550. The Million Dollar Highway has sweeping curves, tight switchbacks, elevation changes. The scenery and views area awesome. The San Juan Mountains are beautiful and have a high concentration of 14ers (mountains with elevations of 14,000+). What makes the road so dangerous is the road has little if any shoulder. There is mountain on one side and sheer drop offs on the other side. In most places the road is just two lane. There are numerous overlooks where the views of the San Juan Mountains can be enjoyed. The Million Dollar Highway is highly traveled by RV's in the summer and is a favorite road of motorcyclists even though it is considered a dangerous road. The Moto Oz Beat the Heat tour has ridden the Million Dollar Highway on several trips. Durango, Silverton and Ouray are fun mountain towns with a lot of shops and places to eat.
