South Africa legalised abortion in 1997 and can be done within the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. Thereafter, women who are pregnant for 13 weeks or more can terminate, under certain circumstances. Abortion is free at government hospitals, but few clinics offer them making many women risk their lives by turning to illegal means.
