What is Autism Spectrum Disorder?
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a condition related to brain development that impacts how a person perceives and socializes with others, causing problems in social interaction and communication.
Here it is important to note that the diagnosis of ASD now includes several conditions that used to be diagnosed separately. Like autistic disorder, pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS), and Asperger syndrome.
How to diagnose autism?
- First of all there should be persistent deficits in social communication and social interaction. For example the inability to have a normal back-and-forth conversation, poor use of verbal and nonverbal communication, lack of facial expressions and difficulties adjusting behavior to suit various social contexts.
- Secondly there should be repetitive patterns of behavior, interests, or activities. For example repetitive movements, lining up objects, inflexible adherence to routines, rigid thinking patterns, greeting rituals, strong attachments to unusual objects and adverse responses to specific sounds or textures.
- Lastly some of these symptoms must be present from early childhood, they must cause a significant impairment in someone personal, social and/or occupational functioning and these can not better be explained by an other disability or developmental delay.
Now you might wonder how is ASD caused?
Unfortunately the exact cause is still unknown and most research demonstrates that there is likely no single cause.
Therefore the following risk factors are though the play a role in the development of ASD:
having an immediate family member with ASD, fragile X syndrome, having other genetic disorders, being conceived by older parents, having a low birth weight, having metabolic imbalances, exposure to heavy metals or toxins during pregnancy and exposure to several viral infections during pregnancy.
How common is an ASD?
Research tells us that about 1 in 54 children has been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. It is also reported to occur in all racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic groups. Lastly,ASD is more than 4 times more common among boys than among girls.
Early signs of ASD:
Avoiding eye contact, Having little interest in other children or caretakers, Limited display of language and/or Getting upset by minor changes in routine.
Contact your doctor:
Your doctor can help you to find out the extent of your symptoms, provide you with tips & tricks and if needed set up a treatment plan. Your doctor might do this by asking about your medical history, your current symptoms, the medication you are using and afterwards your doctor might do a physical examination and some blood tests to rule out any other underlying causes.
Tips and tricks:
Try to be consistent, stick to a schedule, reward good behavior, create a home safety zone, make time for fun activities, avoid sensory sensitivities and do tasks in a serie of simple and structured steps.
Treatment of ASD:
Unfortunately there is no treatment which can cure ASD. All interventions are aimed at reducing symptoms, improving cognitive abilities and daily living skills, and maximizing someone’s ability to function and participate.
There are many types of treatments available which can help to achieve these goals. These include: Behavior and Communication Approaches, Dietary Approaches and Medication.
