By Kharkov Klezmer Band
The Doina is originally a Rumanian shepherd's lament with Greek influence (skaros or kleftika) and was already borrowed by Romani lăutari. The term "doina" could derive from the Sanskrit "d'haina", recalling the Romani influence of this music. Often performed for guests at the banquet table during a wedding or other celebration, doinas allowed a Klezmer to display virtuosity and expressiveness through highly embellished elaborations.
