A musical experience for everyone! Joana Mallwitz is a star conductor taking the audience on expeditions into the heart of great orchestral pieces of music. The head of the Konzerthausorchester Berlin uses what she calls “expedition concerts” to tell interesting stories about great composers and their most famous compositions. First, she introduces the key moments and most unique characteristics on the piano. Then she plays the complete piece with the Konzerthausorchester. We were able to enjoy a performance of “Eroica,” Beethoven's 3rd Symphony. How does this successful conductor manage to inspire audiences of all different ages to enjoy classical music?
Joana Mallwitz was born in Hildesheim/Germany in 1986. From the age of 13, she knew that she wanted to become a conductor. And that's exactly what she did. At 20, she began to lead the orchestra at the Heidelberg Theater, and at 27, she became the general music director in Erfurt, making her the youngest general music director in Europe. In 2019, the magazine "Opernwelt" voted her "Conductor of the Year.” In 2023, she became the Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of the Konzerthausorchester Berlin and is now focusing on crafting new concert formats—including "Expedition Concerts" as well as "Night Sessions,” which invites musicians from other genres of music to perform, including DJs. “Changing Concerts” (German: Wandelkonzerte) are also being performed at different locations located in the Konzerthaus and "In the Middle Concerts” (German: Mittendrin-Konzerte), where the audience is seated in the middle of the orchestra, are also being used to support these formats.
