Magnolia grandiflora 'Little Gem' has dominated the nursery industry as a smaller alternative to the 'Claudia Wannamaker', but they can easily reach 30-40 feet tall in the right setting. When trees are planted closely together (or in a courtyard), they compete with each other for sunlight and grow higher rather than wider.
Magnolia's prefer soils more typical to the Southeast with higher organic material than is often found in the calcareous soils around Dallas. If dark green foliage fades to lime/yellow hues, fertilization with micronutrients may be recommended.
