Starting with the Magnavox Odyssey 2 and a game called "Speedway" we work through the Intellivision and "Rally Racers" and "Auto Racing". The video finishes with "Pole Position" for the Atari 2600. These videos are in order of when the games were released and future videos will continue that format. The Odyssey game came out in 1978. The Intellivision games came out in 1979 and 1981 respectively and Pole Position came out in 1982. You can see, even from these early games, that the progression of racing games was rather quick. The Odyssey Game, Speedway, is extremely blocky and offers nothing in the way of background. The Intellivision games, in contrast, offer more color, a little bit of a background but the controllers were horrible and it was difficult to maneuver the "vehicles". Pole Position, by contrast, offered a better gaming experience with curves in the road, hi and lo on the stick and appeared more like a real race. You will see, as we move up the evolutionary ladder (if you will) that the games progressed far more quickly even still, leading us to the absolutely stunning racing games of today.
