The power house Rashtrapati Bhavan on Tuesday witnessed a unique greet to the President of India by Karnataka’s transgender woman Manjamma Jogathi who was conferred with Padma Shri award for her contribution to folk dance.
As her name was called, Manjamma, draped in a saree went up to the President and in a unique gesture, took the fringe of the saree towards President of India Ram Nath Kovind to wish him good luck before receiving the award. According to the belief system, a good wish from a transgender can bring luck.
Jogati's family disowned her by making her a part of a transgender community that worships Goddess Renuka Yellamma. Members of this community are considered to be married to Goddess Renuka Yellamma.
While life continued to throw curveballs at Jogati, she continued to fight against all odds. She mastered the Jogati Nritya and Janapada songs, Kannada language sonnets sung in the praise of female deities.
With time, Jogati gained popularity and performed on several platforms across the country. In 2006, the Karnataka Janapada Academy Award was conferred upon her. She was also honoured with the Kannada Rajyotsava award by the Karnataka government in 2010. In 2019, she became the first transgender to be appointed as the President of the Janpada Academy.
