(23 May 2021) People in the Nyiragongo region of eastern Congo awoke on Sunday to streets covered in lava and damage to property caused by the eruption of Mount Nyiragongo.
Local resident Amani Zinzahera said he was shocked that volcanologists didn't forewarn them about the eruption.
"They didn't do anything, they didn't even tell us before, a week or three days ahead," he said.
There was no immediate word on any casualties, but footage showed piles of lava engulfing buildings and other infrastructure.
"We have registered the loss of almost an entire neighborhood," said Bahala Shamavu Innocent, a resident of Goma, the capital of North Kivu province. "All the houses in the Buhene neighborhood were burned."
Mount Nyiragongo’s last eruption, in 2002, left hundreds dead and coated airport runways in lava.
More than 100,000 people were left homeless in the aftermath, adding to the fear in Goma on Saturday night.
Congolese President Felix Tshisekedi said he would be returning home on Sunday from Europe earlier than planned in order to help coordinate relief efforts.
