My name is Assim Hussain, I am one of the co-founders of Black Sheep Restaurants.
Black Sheep restaurants is a progressive, Hong Kong based hospitality group. We currently have 18 restaurants. What makes us unique is that we operate across the spectrum. We have fast casual restaurants, we have great neighbourhood restaurants, we also have a few fine dining establishments.
We have been recruiting at Les Roches for 3 years. Personally for me, this is my third trip and I really enjoy coming to the school. That's what is unique about us compared to other companies, we don't come with a quota to fill. We are looking for good students, with good personalities to take back to Hong Kong whether as interns or management trainees. I say this often, everything you need to know about the job, we'll teach you. But you have to come with a good personality and a good attitude.
What makes Les Roches stand out is the school and its curriculum have a heavy emphasis on practical knowledge. So when these students come to us, they have some sort of starting knowledge of how things work in a restaurant. We're not starting from zero. The thing that draws me the most is that they are down to earth, they are humble. But they are ambitious, they have great ideas and they are entrepreneurial. So, in terms of our values as a team and the values of the students here, I fell like they are aligned.
Just something that my father shared with me very early on when I was starting. Which is that the successful ones never stop working. So there have been a lot of setbacks with Black Sheep over the last six years. There have been lots of trials and tribulations. But what makes us successful is our resilience, we've never given up.
I grew up in my family's restaurants, I've worked in finance for four years. When I decided to come back to hospitality; I worked in restaurants for 2 years. Practical knowledge is very, very important, you can't substitute that for anything else so, that's my only advice.
