The Rocca Calascio is the ruins of a hilltop castle in the Italian municipality of Calascio in the province of L'Aquila. It rises in the interior of the Abruzzo and is the highest at 1,460 m, about 1000 years old castle complex of the Apennines.
The complex was later expanded into a small but strong fortress, which was never besieged. A watchtower is said to have been built here as early as the 10th century.
In the years 1461 and 1703 the complex was severely damaged by very severe earthquakes. While the town of Calascio, which lies below the fortress, was rebuilt, the fortress was not.
Calascio is part of the territory of the mountain municipality of Campo Imperatore - Piana di Navelli and is part of the Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park.
The small community in the province of L'Aquila has just 127 inhabitants - significantly fewer than most Italian wedding parties. The small village in Abruzzo is of medieval origin, which you can easily see from the impressive castle ruins of Rocca Calascio above the village.
This is the flagship, not only of the place but of the whole region and also known in the rest of Italy. Because the ruined castle is a well-known film location: Among other things, it can be seen in the film “The Day of the Falcon” (1985 with Michelle Pfeifer) and in “The Name of the Rose” with Sean Connery (1986).
Near the Fortress of Calascio, at a slightly lower altitude, is the Church of Santa Maria della Pietà, an octagonal church built in the seventeenth century.
