(1:26) the term "debrocas" is not entirely clear, but the structure of the song suggests that its meaning is parallel to cliffs and shores. In other words, it would be something like scarps, slope/lofty rocks or precipices. In all likelihood, this is a term that comes from the Galician verb "debrocar-se, deborcar-se", meaning to throw (oneself) off a cliff.

"Quand'eu vejo las ondas" is a love song belonging to the Galician-Portuguese lyrical tradition, composed by the Galician troubadour Rui Fernandes de Santiago. In this poem, the infatuated troubadour confesses that whenever he sees the waves and the high cliffs along the shores, he immediately feels the waves of passion inside his heart towards his beautiful lady (who's not there with him). Therefore, he curses the sea, which causes him so much harm. This allusion to the sea as the reason for the lovers' separation is an idea developed by literary critic Xosé Arias Freixedo, who suggests that the troubadour may have been embarked on military campaigns. Whilst influenced by the universe of the Provencal fin'amor ("courtly love"), the Galician-Portuguese love song does, however, have some distinct characteristics, starting with the fact that it's usually shorter and includes a refrain ("Maldito sea'l mare/ que mi faz tanto male").

It's important to mention that, in terms of classification, this love song actually displays a hybrid nature of genres: a "love song", in which the masculine voice curses the primordial element of the "friend songs" within the maritime or boat subgenre: the waters. Furthermore, following the friend song genre, there is a clear parallel formal structure. Due to this ambiguity in the chant, it's possible to classify it as belonging to both genres. As for the Galician troubadour, he was active in the second quarter of the 13th century. His rubric in his friend songs indicates that he was a cleric, while his love songs reveal that he was a native from Santiago de Compostela. According to Ron Fernández, he could have been a monk at the monastery of San Paio de Antealtares in Santiago in 1284. He also seems to have attended the court of Alfonso X, the monarch who appointed him as a chaplain.

É importante mencionar que, em termos de classificação, esta cantiga de amor revela uma natureza híbrida de gêneros: uma cantiga de amor, em que o eu lírico masculino maldiz o elemento primordial das cantigas de amigo cujo subgênero é a marinha ou barcarola: as águas. Bem como é visível, de acordo com o género cantiga de amigo, uma estrutura formal paralelística. Dado esta ambiguidade da cantiga, é possível classifica-la entre ambos os gêneros. Acerca do trovador galego, este esteve ativo no segundo quartel do século XIII. A sua rubrica nas suas cantigas de amigo indica que foi clérigo, já nas suas cantigas de amor, demonstra que era natural de Santiago de Compostela. Segundo Ron Fernández, é possível que tenha sido um monge do mosteiro de S. Paio de Antealtares em Santiago, em 1284. Parece também ter frequentado a corte de Alfonso X, monarca que o terá nomeado capelão.
