Sometimes how you plan nature activities is more important than what activities you plan. "I want to start a nature school... but I don't know how to plan the curriculum!"
In this episode we'll talk about what happens behind the scenes of a successful nature school. Whether for young kids, teens or adults.
1. Know Your Audience:
- Age
- Number of participants
- Will parents/teachers be present?
- Amount of time outdoors? Indoors?
- Gather contact info for future communications (newsletters, social media, ..)
- Do a pre-event assessment of participants expectations/requests
2. Choose An Exciting Topic:
- Animal tracking
- Bird language
- Nature ninja training/Jedi training
- Wild food harvest
- Ecology adventure
- Navigation excursion
3. Follow the Natural Learning Cycle:
a. Gather Together (Before)
- Introduce the topic
- Share a relevant story
- Give the mission & prime awareness with questions
b. Have Adventures (During)
- Choose flexible activities to fill the time
- Start with the most focused-learning activities, then lead to more unstructured
c. Gather Again (After)
- Harvest the stories with talking stick or popcorn style
