EDIT: alright a bunch of people who are new to the series are finding this and ignoring the spoiler warning, so let me just throw up a disclaimer that YES DM gets more "intense" but it doesn't just dramatically segue into Berserk or Made in Abyss territory. You aren't being tricked with funny goofy series and then BAM endless despair, this is an angst edit, I am deliberately framing these scenes as angstily as possible.

DM itself maintains its sense of humor throughout and while the stakes raise they never get so bad that you're left feeling hopeless. Even this scene, which looks pretty harrowing out of context, is built up to with a sense of "darn it sucks we're gonna have to do this but it's necessary so that we can achieve the happy ending we are working towards". This series establishes in the very beginning that death is not permanent in the dungeon and the characters are very much aware of this.

If you decide to drop the series because you looked at spoilers and got the wrong idea I can't stop you but you are missing out on a wonderful and funny story with a satisfying ending.
