April is Native Hawaiian plants month! It's also the month of the Merrie Monarch festival ([ Ссылка ]), the largest festival in Hawaii dedicated to Hawaiian culture, specifically Hula.
All the culturally important plants are featured there, and you can see flowers and plants such as 'Ōhi'a lehua, Maile, A'ali'i, Palapalai etc. being woven into lei that adorns the hula dancers.
In 2022, 'Ōhi'a lehua officially became the endemic state tree of Hawai'i, raising awareness for the cultural and ecological importance of this tree for Hawai'i.
'Ōhi'a lehua grows only in Hawai'i, nowhere else.
Even though most of the flowers of this tree are red, there are also yellow, peach and orange variants of 'Ōhi'a lehua. I've recently seen a yellow 'Ōhi'a lehua and it was a marvelous view to behold!
Unfortunately, a deadly fungus disease, commonly known as Rapid Ohia Death, has taken out whole forests of 'Ōhi'a lehua trees over the past few years.

To celebrate this incredible tree and its stunning flowers, let's paint 'Ōhi'a lehua together! I'll show you how to create 'Ōhi'a lehua flowers in a loose style and decorate them with metallic highlights.
Materials for our live painting session:
You can use any watercolors that you have at hand. I'm using Aloha watercolors in Ohia, Eucalyptus, Matcha, Mango and Kona Jazz (shimmer). This technique works best on cotton watercolor paper. For brushes, I'll be using quill brushes and a No. 2 round brush.
