Mechanical levers to operate the lower quadrant semaphore signals and change points on the track to guide trains on the right route are seen in operation on arrival of a passenger train from Ootacamund to Coonoor, on the World Heritage meter gauge Nilgiri Mountain Railway.
These pretty signaling cabins have been replaced by bright color-light signals and electrical switch-gear to route trains on the main line network of Indian Railways, and can be spotted during journeys with the word: "Abandoned" painted on them. These signalling cabins nowadays really look decrepit and ill-maintained on mainline routes of Indian Railways after they were shorn of their fixtures.
It is a pleasure to see such a cabin in action at Coonoor - the biggest station on the Nilgiri Mountain Railway and the terminus of the railway from 1899-1908, before its extension to Ootacamund.
To know more about this World Heritage hill railway do read my book: "Nilgiri Mountain Railway - From Lifeline to Oblivion" which can be obtained on this link: [ Ссылка ]
