Performance appraisal is the process of measuring the output of an employee that contributes to the productivity of an organization. Simply put, how you measure a worker’s productivity, whether they do the job correctly or not.
Performance appraisal is the systematic review and evaluation of job performance. It typically includes: 1) objective goal setting; 2) continuous coaching and feedback; 3) performance appraisal; and 4) development planning.
Errors in Performance Appraisal - The combination of human raters and imperfect instruments can lead to several errors in performance appraisal. The more subjective the performance appraisal instrument is, the more open the appraisal is to these errors.
Legal Issues in Performance Appraisal - It is illegal in the U. S. to discriminate in performance appraisals on the basis of non-performance-related factors such as age, gender, race, ethnicity, religion, gender identity, sexuality and disability. No employee can be promoted, demoted, fired, transferred, or laid off on these factors (Hrumm).
