One of the great pleasures of living in Santa Cruz County is enjoying its beautiful beaches. Hi, I'm Dawn Thomas, with MoveToTheBeach.com. The beach can a fun and and relaxing place. For folks like me, who are dog owners, the ability to bring along our furry friends is a must. So here are the best dog friendly beaches in the Santa Cruz area.
It’s Beach (Lighthouse Field State Beach) - Santa Cruz
This dog friendly beach offers scenic views of the lighthouse, Monterey Bay, and on clear days, Monterey itself. There is a beautiful rock arch at the north end of the beach, that can be explored at low tide. Dogs must be on leash at this beach.
Seabright State Beach - Santa Cruz
This beach is a local favorite. Dogs are allowed, on leash, and bonfires are common. Seabright is a great beach to relax and enjoy views of Santa Cruz Harbor, Walton Lighthouse and the Wharf.
Mitchell’s Cove - Santa Cruz
This beach has more of an urban feel, and is perfect for pups as they allow dogs off leash before 10am and after 4pm. Low tide is the best time to enjoy this one, providing adequate room to enjoy a walk, or for the dogs to run around.
Rio Del Mar - Aptos
Stretching for one mile south of the sunken ship at it’s north end, this wide, sandy beach is the perfect place for a long, easy walk along the water. Rio Del Mar is also a great spot for birdwatching. Dogs are allowed on leash.
New Brighton State Beach - Capitola
This is a great spot for the all day family trip to the beach. New Brighton is a park and a beach with amenities like picnic areas, campsites, showers, and bathrooms. It’s a great spot for swimming. Dogs are allowed on leash.
Hidden Beach - Santa Cruz
Hidden beach is part of a small neighborhood park that offers a picnic area, park benches, and playground. The beach itself is a fantastic spot to relax, and is generally quiet due to the limited parking close by. Dogs are allowed on leash at Hidden Beach.
