In trading, you often hear a lot about volume. It's one of the most important things you should track. Price is always first, but volume is a close second. Today, Tim Bohen covers how to use it and how to spot high-volume plays.

So, why is volume so important in trading?
Volume represents the number of buyers in the market. The stock market is a constant cycle of supply and demand. More volume means more demand. And if there’s less supply, the price will go up because traders who want in will bid it higher and higher.
Next, check out the 60-day average. This can tell you whether the stock is trading all of the float. If it's not trading all of the available shares, that tells you that there’s little interest in the stock.
But that can change ... How?
Look at a stock that’s trading twice as many shares as it normally trades in the entire day. That tells you the stock is almost surely in play — it’s doing what's called ‘float rotating.’ So say there are only a million shares, and briefly after the market open, a million shares have already been bought ... The only way for this stock to continue to trade is for someone to sell higher.
This creates big, explosive moves. So back to supply and demand … With less supply and more demand, the stock spikes.
Look for these high-volume, low-float plays. But remember, you still need to have a trading plan.
With StocksToTrade it’s just two clicks to search and find every stock that’s traded more than 100% of the 60-day average volume. This can give you a ton of stocks, but you can add in other criteria with our custom screener to narrow your list down.
Key takeaway: Focus on the stocks trading ridiculous volume. It's a smart way to help you grow a small account and one of the easiest ways to catch big momentum.
