"Home on the Range," a classic western folk song, became the official state song of Kansas in 1947. It is often considered the "unofficial anthem" of the American West. The lyrics, by Dr. Brewster M. Higley, are from his poem, "My Western Home," published in the "Smith County (Kansas) Pioneer" in 1872. The melody was composed by Higley's friend, Daniel E. Kelley. Charles Manning improvises this piano accompaniment for "Home on the Range." Below are the words for two of the verses. Sing along with Charles!
~ Lyrics ~
Oh, give me a home where the buffalo roam,
Where the deer and the antelope play,
Where seldom is heard a discouraging word,
And the skies are not cloudy all day.
Home, home on the range,
Where the deer and the antelope play,
Where seldom is heard a discouraging word,
And the skies are not cloudy all day.
How often at night when the heavens are bright,
With the light from the glittering stars,
Have I stood there amazed and asked as I gazed,
If their glory exceeds that of ours.
Home, home on the range,
Where the deer and the antelope play,
Where seldom is heard a discouraging word,
And the skies are not cloudy all day.
