The Odessa steps sequence in Battleship Potemkin (1925) is lauded as a highlight scene in Sergei M. Eisenstein’s career, as well as film history as a whole. People will praise Eisenstein’s revolutionary editing style and the film’s effective use of communist propaganda, but something that struck me recently is the ways in which the sequence portrays women.
