Dr Indu Bansal Aggarwal, Senior Consultant-Oncology and Radiation Oncology at Narayana Superspeciality Hospital, Gurugram explains the role of radiation treatment in prostate cancer.
Radiation treatment is the most effective form of therapy in prostate cancer cases.
1. External beam radiation therapy
This is a completely painless procedure where radiation is given through a distance. These high-energy multiple X-rays are given through cobalt machines or linear accelerators.
2. Brachytherapy
The physician places radio-active sources (permanent or temporary) inside the prostate of the patient’s body to eliminate or kill the cancer cells.
3. Stereotactic Radiotherapy
It is used when the cancer is limited to the prostate gland and has not progressed to other parts of the body. The surgeon performs a completely focused treatment in the region by placing radioactive markers to determine prostate motion.
Some notable points from the expert:
The treatment can be done from 25-35 or further depending upon the technique and fractionation.
In hypofractionation treatment, the medical expert reduces the fractions and increases the number of total treatments or doses performed on the patient's body.
In conventional fractionation, treatment is given to the patient for a period of 35-37 days in 5 days per week. It only takes a few minutes for this form of treatment.
Radiation is one of the standard treatments given to prostate cancer patients which shows remarkable results in recovery from Cancer.
