In this video we will cover why tanning beds are bad for you!
Okay, it make sense that some of you are tempted to lay under a tanning bed. It allows you to get a quick tan, it is relaxing and you feel like you look better afterwards. However, tanning beds tan you by exposing your skin to a high concentration of ultraviolet rays. Much higher than typical sun exposure would cause.
The ultraviolet rays consist out of waves of different waves lengths. The two most important types are UVA and UVB rays. The UVB rays only reach superficial levels of our skin, mostly causing a sunburn, but the UVA rays go much deeper into our skin. They can cause DNA damage in our skin cells leading to uncontrollable growth of some of these cells and ultimately causing several types of skin cancer.
And you would never guess which type of UV-radiation tanning beds use? About 95% of the radiation tanning beds emit is UV-A radiation, emitting about 10-15 times more UVA rays than midday sun.
Yea sure, it provides you with an immediate short-term tan, by bronzing the melanine in your skin. But it will also provide you with a long-term risk on skin cancer, especially Melanoma’s which are the most dangerous form of skin cancer.
For those of you looking for a video which explains how you can check yourself for skin cancer, than check out this video here: [ Ссылка ]
According to a study from 2014 18% of adolescents and 45% of university students had tanned indoors in the previous year. And in the united states alone there are 10-30 million tanners! That is almost unbelievable, considering the health-risks this causes.
And for those of you watching, who have tanned indoors before, make sure to check yourself for skin cancer regularly. Also check parts of your skin where skin cancer would not normally occur. Because area’s that may come in contact with a tanning bed don’t necessarily see the sun.
Now besides the increased risk on skin cancer, UVA rays also lead to an accelerated aging of your skin. It lowers the elasticity in your skin and makes it more saggy and more wrinkly. An other good reason to avoid tanning.
Here I also want to add that a tan or a darker skin tone for that matter protects you marginally better against UVB-rays and therefore protects you from sunburns. However you still remain vulnerable to UVA-rays
How can you get a safe tan?
The only safest way to get a tan is by applying a sunless tanner, a bronzers. They improve each year and I am told they do a great job making you looked tanned. Bronzers are really safe though, and contain an ingredient which tints your skin. Which is just temporary. It is important that you apply sunscreen over the sunless tanner. This will actually protect your skin from the UV-radiation from the sun!
