Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) started providing care for people who use drugs—specifically those with opioid addictions—in Kiambu County, Kenya, in 2019, with the goal of reducing deaths due to overdose and other destructive consequences of drug addiction.
The medically assisted therapy (MAT) clinic was the first in the county to provide opioid substitution therapy with methadone and buprenorphine as part of its harm reduction package. The approach aims to lessen the negative health, social, and financial impacts of drug addiction. The clinic also offers services to prevent infections, transmission of HIV, and viral hepatitis, treatment for tuberculosis, mental health care, and more.
“The MAT clinic means a lot to me,” said Michael, a former patient recovering from heroin addiction. “I could certainly be dead if the facility wasn’t around.”
MSF handed over the project to the county department of health and its partners in June 2024, with 556 patients actively receiving care and a total of 1,619 having enrolled over nearly five years.
