Kefalonia, or Kefallinia, is an island in the Ionian Sea and belongs to the Ionian Islands. Officially, mainly in the administration, it is referred to by the oldest type "Kefallinia". It is the sixth largest island in Greece after Crete, Evia, Lesbos, Rhodes and Chios as well as the largest island of the Ionian Sea.
It is assumed that the island of Melitis mentioned in Acts 28:1 is Kefalonia.
Geography
Kefalonia (Kefallania) is the largest and most mountainous island of the Ionian Islands and the third most populated after Corfu and Zakynthos. It is located opposite the entrance of Patraikos Gulf, north of Zakynthos, south of Lefkada and west of Ithaca.
The island has an area of approximately 773 sq.km. and 36,064 people live in it. A large part of its area is occupied by the Ainos mountain range designated as a National Park with the most important peaks being Megas Soros (1,628 m), Agia Dynati (1,131 m), Eumorfia (1,043 m) and Kokkini Rachi (1,078 m). Ainos is from the mountains with the most extreme weather conditions, being the first in Greece to receive the low barometric pressures coming from Dysmas. It is famous for the unique in the world "Cephalinian Black Fir" and that is why it is called "Monte Nero" (Black Mountain) and for its herds of wild small horses of the "Equus caballus" race. The most important plains are those of Krania, the Paliki peninsula, Araklion and Sami.
The coasts of Kefalonia form many bays and capes. The most important gulfs are Sami, Myrtos, Lourdas, Atheras, Fiskardos, Livadios, Argostoli also known as Koutavos. The main capes are (starting from the south and proceeding in an easterly direction) Munda, Kapros, Sarakiniko, Mytikas, Kentri, northern Dafnoudi, in the northwest Atheras, in the west Ortholithia, Skiza and Gerogombos and further south Akrotiri and Agia Pelagia, Liakas, Kastanas, etc. The coasts are generally rocky and steep towards the Ionian, while they have gentler formations towards the eastern side.
Of particular interest are the island's caves, the majority of which are located in the wider area of Sami, such as the famous Melissani lake cave, Zervati and Agioi Theodoroi in Karavomylos, Agalaki, Hiridoni and Sotiras in Poulata, Drogarati in Haliotata with impressive stalactites and stalagmites in which concerts etc. are organized from time to time.
Myrtos beach on the north-west side of the island has been voted 11 times as the best Greek beach according to the annual vote of the Ministry of Health and Welfare. In Sami, Antisamos beach is particularly impressive and popular, as well as Koutsoupia beach, which can be accessed by boat or by footpath. On the western side of the island, specifically in Paliki, one can visit the beaches of Petana, Lepeda, Xi and Platia Ammos. Around the town of Argostoli and in the area of Livathos there are many sandy beaches, such as the busy Platys and Makris Gialos and further east the beaches of Lourdas and Skala.
Several earthquakes hit the area every year. In 1953 a terrible earthquake almost destroyed the island, leaving "standing" only the northernmost part of the island, the Erissos peninsula, where the traditional settlement of Fiskardo is located.
