An Asthma Attack is when a person's airways suddenly become constricted and cause difficulty breathing. They are characterized by wheezing, fatigue, uncontrollable coughing, and chest tightening. Attacks are common and are due to asthma, which is a condition causing inflammation of the airways.
The inflammation produces mucus, which further causes the airways to become even more narrowed. Coughing at night or early morning, or waking up with trouble breathing, can signify an Asthma Attack. There may be a genetic component to Asthma Attacks. Allergies are also a contributing factor.
Triggers include dust mites, changes in temperature, stress, anxiety, and exercise. Exposure to irritants like household chemicals and smoke can also induce an Asthma Attack. Asthma is a chronic illness but attacks can be shortened and even prevented through medication and by reducing exposure to triggers. Medication includes pills, inhalers, steroids, and nebulizers, or breathing machines. Asthma Attacks can be life-threatening.
