This one is the most unknown country.
This is Western Sahara which I’m sure not many of you heard about. If we go back to the end of the 19th century we’ll se that what we call now the Western Sahara was a Spanish colony.
After one century, the Spanish Sahara was the only colony in Africa that didn’t managed to get it’s independence. In 1976, when the Spanish withdrew from this area, the people from Western Sahara established the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, which was quickly invaded by their neighbor Morocco.
Around 80% of Western Sahara is controlled by Morocco. In December 2020 the United States became the first country to formally recognize Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara, in exchange for Morocco’s normalization of ties with Israel; Israel became the second country to make the recognition in 2023. With limited recognition, Western Sahara remains the most unknown area in the world.
