Synopsis:
In 1972, Paul Schrader, who was a film critic at the time, published one of the most beautiful film books to date: “Transcendental Style in Film”. Referring to the works of Yasujiro Ozu, Robert Bresson and Carl Theodor Dreyer, he examines cinema’s ability to capture what is invisible to the eye: the transcendental. On 23 May 2018, a new edition of this classic was published in the United States. In the revised preface, Schrader rethinks and modernizes his reflections on Slow Cinema, and includes the works of contemporary directors such as Nuri Bilge Ceylan or Béla Tarr. The book was the starting point for his lecture “Rethinking Transcendental Style”. Schrader explained in his usual dynamic and absorbing way why he wrote the book 45 years ago and how his thinking has changed since.
