Forging the Future | RIDC’s Mill 19 is the catalytic redevelopment of the former Pittsburgh J&L Steel mill into a green, sustainable advanced manufacturing research center. The building was left to rust when the steel industry collapsed, but its bones – the underlying steel superstructure – remained strong. They now support the Mill’s solar array, and today, Mill 19 is growing into an engine of revitalization for the entire Hazelwood Green community and Pittsburgh region.
Mill 19’s steel superstructure supports the largest single sloped roof solar array in the U.S., with enough electricity to power 380 homes. The complex has numerous other sustainability features including landscaping that incorporates a rainwater recycling system and reclaimed parts of the former mill. The Mill’s redevelopment story includes community, foundation, and university partnerships for the funding, use, and design of the Mill with RIDC serving as the non-profit developer for the site.
Mill 19 is home to advanced manufacturing partners including Carnegie Mellon’s Manufacturing Futures Initiative, the Advanced Robotics for Manufacturing Institute (ARM), Catalyst Connection, and Motional.
With robotics and advanced manufacturing rapidly becoming economic pillars of the region, finding sites that can be redeveloped into places where companies can invest and grow is crucial. These industries are opportunities to bring jobs to distressed regions and align projects with community redevelopment goals. These new industries have enabled us to develop a vision for the future for many of the region’s distressed former industrial sites, an opportunity to invest in them again, getting them back on the tax rolls and producing thousands of new family-sustaining jobs. RIDC: Who We Are | RIDC is a nonprofit developer founded by and for the Pittsburgh region. We trace our history back more than 60 years, to a time when leaders in the region envisioned a nonprofit dedicated to developing properties that would support our industrial base, create jobs, and grow our economy. RIDC went on to pioneer the region’s first industrial parks, and when the steel industry fell, we continued to support the region by taking on those abandoned industrial sites, bringing in new technology-based companies and getting those properties back on the tax rolls.
From the Pittsburgh technology center to the sustainable Mill 19, RIDC has been on the forefront of providing spaces for the growth of technology and innovation within the Southwestern PA region. We view RIDC’s success as part of a larger vision for our region; our decisions are motivated by the economic development potential of our projects and the ability of our facilities and our tenants to impact the overall community.
