Matthew, Mark and Luke go on an epic adventure to explore Albania. In this first part, we start our road trip in Saranda and explore the beautiful UNESCO World Heritage City of Gjirokastër (Gjirokastra), with its distinctive Ottoman architecture and stone roofed buildings.
Gjirokaster (the city of stone) is not only charming, with its steep cobblestone streets, but the 4th century castle fortress (the biggest in Albania) is extremely well-preserved and very impressive. I got to view it from the air with my drone.
We then drove on, hoping to get to Berat en-route to Tirana. Being adventurous, we thought we would take the slightly slower (according to Google Maps) route via SH74, thinking it would be more scenic. Boy, that was not a good idea in our rented VW Golf.
