What is lactose intolerance and why does it make you so gassy?
Lactose intolerance is when the body has difficulty digesting a sugar called lactose, normally found in milk and other dairy products.
But, it isn’t an allergy.
The most common cause is when the body doesn’t produce enough lactase, an enzyme that breaks down the lactose.
If lactose isn’t broken down, the natural bacteria in our gut get to use it instead, turning it into gas and other byproducts.
The gas causes bloating, tummy pain, and excessive wind.
And the other byproducts pull water into the gut, causing diarrhoea.
Tests aren’t really needed to diagnose this condition because it can be fairly clear from the symptoms.
However, it shouldn’t be confused with a cow's milk protein allergy, which can cause breathing problems, itchy skin and swelling of the face, lips and eyes.
Avoiding food and drinks with lactose will help with symptoms and some people take lactase enzyme supplements which also might help.
Others might experience these symptoms if a condition or surgery has affected their gut lining, so it's not always a problem with having enough of the enzyme.
