The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency Rafael Grossi has said that Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant (Europe's biggest active nuclear plant) occupied by Russia is completely out of control. In this video, we will quickly learn about IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency).
In the mid-20th century, there were deep fears regarding the controversial applications of nuclear technology. In 1953, the then US President Eisenhower addressed the UN General Assembly, which is famously known as the Atoms for Peace speech. In this speech, he proposed the creation of an international body to regulate and promote the peaceful use of nuclear energy. Fast forward to 1957, an autonomous organization was established to provide a platform for global cooperation on the safe, secure, and peaceful application of nuclear technology. Today we know it as the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). It has its headquarters in Vienna, Austria. This intergovernmental agency has 175 member states and multiple partners worldwide. It was established independently of the United Nations through its own international treaty, the IAEA Statute. Still, it reports to the United Nations General Assembly and the United Nations Security Council. It provides safeguards against the misuse of nuclear technology and promotes nuclear safety. It aims to prevent nuclear weapons proliferation and inhibit the military use of nuclear technology.
