One of the foundations of US national security is maintenance of a nuclear deterrent. The National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) is the Federal agency tasked with maintaining and stewarding the nuclear stockpile. Doing so involves a variety of plasma based activities, from experiments on high energy density (HED) plasmas that provide the data needed to simulate nuclear devices, to the development of sophisticated diagnostics to probe these plasmas.
In this video, Dr. Sarah Nelson of NNSA describes the national, plasma focused program whose goal is to reliably maintain the nuclear deterrent and reduce nuclear proliferation.
