January 6th is National Technology Day! It is a day to recognize technological innovations of the past, how technology helps to change the world today, and how it can affect the future.
Sacramento is home to a variety of technological innovations of the mid-1800s including telegraph, railroad, and municipal innovations. Sacramento is also home to the 4th newspaper published in California history (the Placer Times) and one of the longest running newspapers in California history (the Sacramento Bee first published on February 3, 1857 and still in operation).
Printing has certainly evolved since Gutenberg’s common press in the 1450s and we are lucky to have printing presses not only on display, but are also operational, in our museum. For today, Howard used an antique printing press to print an image of a more modern press. This halftone shows a printer operating a Little Giant from the 1940s.
The printing press Howard operated in this video is a Washington hand press that was manufactured in 1852 by the Charles Foster & Brother Company in Cincinnati, Ohio.
