New to BFS - style fishing? Go here: [ Ссылка ]
Ride along (by the gift of my bodycam) as Duncan and I go in search of perch, trout and whatever else we can find on finesse lures on an August day with some wild weather.
Duncan fished his fixed-spool, finesse lure spinning reel rig, while I opted for my super-fun affordable Bait Finesse System (BFS) rig.
Here's a quick rundown of what I used in case you want to have a go yourself:
Reel: Fishband GH100, left hand wind Bait Finesse System baitcasting reel (great value for money)
Reel Upgrade: ABEC 7 Ceramic/hybrid bearings for GH100 Reel spool & side-plate only
Rod: Tsurinoya ARES C472 UL (4'7" - lure weights 1g - 6g , line weight 2lb - 6lb)
Line: 4lb Berkley Trilene Fluorocarbon, fished straight through
Lure: 2" (50mm) 1-g T Tail Soft Worm swim baits from Wish (!!)
Hook: Diawa Prorex mini jig head (2g and Size 6 hook - with the barb crushed down using rig pliers)
Apart from clipping Duncan with a glancing blow (sorry bro!), I really felt the benefit of the (very affordable) ceramic hybrid bearings upgrade. You can run these without extra lubricant - and this actually helps to ensure that there is less resistance to getting the spool turning (since stock bearings are often over-greased in order to keep them silent and smooth-feeling).
With a bit of practice, and once the brakes (and/or your thumb control on the spool) is dialled in - it's REALLY satisfying to give a little flick to load up the super flexi-rod and fire that bait low and accurately to drop on the far bank. I must say I have been impressed with the Fishband GH100 reel from that perspective - and the BFS style casting also lends itself to lowering and cushioning the lure onto the surface as gently as you can.
This certainly helps when fishing for trout - particularly in flatter water - but I'm sure it is useful for perch and all other target species too.
There's a couple of casts on the wider part of the river in the middle of the video where you can see the lure land right on the money with very little effort/hand movement at my end of the rig!
I was also extremely fortunate to latch into a really nice perch from a section of river that neither myself nor Duncan had lure-fished before. My only exploration was of the upper 50 yards or so of the reach over a decade ago when fishing with a fly rod.
Anyway, this video is a super-straighforward/no frills ride along Vlog of a really fun trip that has some fond memories for me. It's not going to win any cinematography awards, but it does capture the authentic feel of going out and exploring somewhere new using BFS gear and tactics.
I hope you enjoy it as much as I did while fishing there,
Paul
