Clip Quote : "Once upon a long time ago, there was an island...
some Dutch, some Indians and some beads.
And those beads led to steamboats and skyscrapers
Wall Street and electric lights, newspapers, Ellis Island, the Yankees
Central Park and the first World's Fair, Broadway, the Chrysler Building and Studio 54.
I like to think of that as New York City B.C: Before Carrie." (0:30 -1:31)
"Time is a funny thing. A decade can flash by in an uneventful second.
And then, in just two years, monumental things can happen." (3:11 - 3:23)
About this clip: The girls visit Bergdorf Goodman at the Fifth Avenue for the wedding registry of their gay best friends, Anthony Marantino and Stanford Blatch, who were once sworn-enemies.
Carrie Bradshaw's narratorial voice-over begins the Sex and the City 2 movie with the Kairos-Chronos distinction, hailing this moment in time in her life as eventful. The association with "meaningful time" continues in the movie with the intensity of a trope. Big and Carrie argue over wanting two days a week off marriage; Miranda Hobbes struggles with time management, receives flak from Steve, Brady and Magda but finally chooses attending her son's science fair competition over her job; Charlotte worries over her cellphone relationship with Harry even when she is time zones ahead in the new Middle East and admits to Miranda over drinks that her own children drive her crazy, perchance leaving no time for herself; Samantha Jones takes hormones to bypass her ageing to travel back in time and be thirty five by the time other girls turn fifty; the girls travel time zones ahead to the New Middle East only to find the women-folk there, forced to live years behind the times, eating french-fries behind the veil across the mouth but reading Susan Somers and wearing Prada in the confines of a shack, evoking Conradian overtones but Miranda applauds the sequinned-Burqas of the Real Housewives of Abu Dhabi as embracing old traditions in new and personal ways; Gaurav's life in Abu Dhabi as an Indian butler who sees his wife only once in a month is a parable to Carrie because time doesn't matter to them and each time they see each other, it is wonderful; It is "Time", like it always will, that helps the Prestons move on. Carrie and Big's matrimonial glitches finally fade away and all's right in the world, as the movie reaches its "The End" through an old black-and-white movie that Big and Carrie watch once again in the comfort and luxury of their Manhattan apartment.
Quite contrary to the usual criticism leveled against it, as all fluff and frivolity, the Sex and the City Movie 2 Opening Credits, along-with rest of the scenes of Star and King's SATC series and movies, based on Candace Bushnell - who shares her initials with Carrie Bradshaw, like a female protagonist in an Aphra Behn Restoration drama - are full of meaning, witty double-entendres that invite a replay, and the narratives are as beautifully interwoven with their novelties and recurrences as their labels.
