The World Food Programme (WFP) is the United Nations agency responsible for food assistance. It is the world's largest humanitarian organization focused on hunger and food security, and the largest provider of school meals. Founded in 1961, it is headquartered in Rome and has offices in 80 countries. As of 2020, it served 115.5 million people in 80-plus countries, the largest since 2012.
Along with emergency food relief, WFP also provides technical assistance and development assistance, including the management of supply chains and logistics, the development of emergency preparedness and response capabilities, and the strengthening of climate change resilience by promoting social safety programs. It also provides humanitarian workers with passenger services, as well as cash and medical supplies
With the aim of achieving SDG 2 for "zero hunger" by 2030, the World Food Programme participates as an executive member of the UN Sustainable Development Group.
Food assistance and preventing food from being used as a weapon of war and conflict have been the main objectives of the World Food Programme for many years now - and in 2020, it won the Nobel Peace Prize for its efforts.
