The band Týr was formed in January 1998 by Faroe Islanders living in Copenhagen (at the time). Týr had their Faroese breakthrough in April 2001 when they participated in the Prix Føroyar contest. "Ormurin Langi" was the greatest Faroese hit ever in the Faroes. Early 2002, the same song hit bigtime in Iceland and paved the way for Týr's popularity there.
Týr is the Germanic God of courage, strength, justice, victory, defense, and battle. He sacrifices his hand to Fenris in order to bind him. Týr will perish at Ragnarok when he fights the wolf-hound, Garm, who in turn perishes at Týr's hand.
The god Týr was originally known as Tiwaz. The T-rune, which is named after him, symbolizes fighting for truth and one's beliefs, as well as standing for dedication and valour in combat.
