The Supreme Court came down hard on the Centre over judicial appointments saying it can’t bring the entire institution ‘to a grinding halt’ by not making the appointments. The court said it would summon secretaries in PMO and justice department if judicial appointments are not fast-tracked. It also informed the government that it can’t stall appointment of judges awaiting a new Memorandum of Procedure. Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi, who has sought time till November 11, promised the court that there is no deadlock from the government’s side and that the processing of names will be faster if a new MoP is finalised. Earlier this month, the government had assured the top court that it will process on “top priority” the proposals relating to appointment of judges that have been pending for more than three months despite being cleared by the collegium.
