[ Ссылка ] - In support of the 2021 Go Red for Women initiative, we wanted to learn more about the management and treatment of heart valve disease from a woman's perspective. For that reason, we interviewed Dr. Joanna Chikwe, the Chair of Cardiac Surgery at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, California.
The following 7 questions were submitted directly to Dr. Chikwe by patients from the HeartValveSurgery.com community:
1. Donna asked, “Are heart valve disease symptoms different for women compared to men?”
2. Cheryl’s question is, “For women… Can delaying surgery cause additional risks for patients with heart valve disease and/or atrial fibrillation, an irregular heart rhythm?”
3. Kathy asked, “Are there techniques that can be used to help minimize the scarring for women after surgery? When can a minimally-invasive approach be considered?”
4. Carolyn asked, “I’m an active 72-year old woman with severe mitral regurgitation and no symptoms. I had breast implants over 30 years ago. Will my implants, which are very firm now, impact my surgery?”
5. Kim asked, “I was recently diagnosed with moderate aortic stenosis due to a bicuspid aortic valve. I want to have children but I’m guessing that’s at least 5 years away. What should I know about getting pregnant and giving birth with heart valve disease?”.
6. Laura’s question was, “I had tissue aortic valve replacement ten years ago and may require a re-replacement. I’ve heard that to get a TAVR valve-in-valve, the patient needs a large surgical valve to implant the TAVR. As a woman, I’m smaller. Can I get TAVR for my valve re-replacement?”
7. Beth asked, “Do you recommend the use of surgical bras during the recovery?"
