So I needed to adjust my trailer to fit my riveted jon boat. I never really dialed it in until now.
The main thing that made me want to adjust my trailer was the fact that the jon boat would hang off the end of the bunks on the trailer. This could cause denting or "oil canning" in the bottom of the boat. Especially if the engine is putting a lot of weight on the transom at the end of the boat.
To fix this I needed to move the boat forward... OR move the bunks back. I go over that in more detail in the second video.
The other main reason was to lower the bunks to get the boat lower on the trailer
This video is all about the tips and tricks I came across while researching this topic because there are few things to watch out for.
First, make sure you have the clearance to lower your boat. This could be anything from your wheel wells, to the turning radius of your vehicle. This could also be if you lower your trailer bunks too far, the boat may rub on the trailer in certain spots when you launch the boat. Be on the lookout for that.
Another is what propulsion system you have on your boat. I have a longtail mud motor so I really don't have many clearance restrictions. If you have a normal outboard, this could prevent you from lowering your boat any further do to the lower unit of the outboard engine bottoming out things if you are not able to pivot the motor up and out of the way.
With lowering boat on the trailer, this also means the tiller handle off my longtail mud motor is going to be lower. This means that people driving behind me may not notice is as much as usual so I will probably add some more orange flag tape to it.
Bow stop. For the bow stop, you can move this forward or backward. If you move it forward, the boat will sit further up on the trailer. This will also put more weight on the tongue and also decrease your turning radius. If you move the bow stop toward the rear of the trailer, the boat will sit further back, which means less tongue weight, and may give you more turning radius.
Winch placement - I like to put the winch below the bow stop and attachment point. This sorta falls into the bow stop topic. Just think about what you are trying to accomplish and what each adjustment affects.
