*Read on for what I DON'T LIKE about the Sony.... Adding another camera to my collection, the Sony AS-15 sounded like a good choice, being $200 cheaper than the already obsolete GoPro3 Black. Sony has a good reputation with me, so I decided to try this camera, while I wait for the GP4 Gold. I already have a GP2 Silver with Wi fi and since the specs for the GP3 black aren't something that most would see on YT, I figured that spending $200 for just that would not justify the purchase. I'll wait, as I usually never buy the first model of anything right away. Besides the fun was the challenge to see if the DJI Phantom quad could lift all 3 cameras, how well the Steady shot would work over my gyro controlled camera mounts, and somehow figure out how to edit 4 cameras at one so you could see the fun. None of the scenes were lightened, darkened, sharpened or contrasted. What you see is what you get.
What I really like:
The best thing about the Sony is the Steady Shot and the Carl Ziess lens. It eliminates having to use special gyro or foam mounts as you see, I just used balsa wood. I also think the Sony light sensor is better and changes to the light faster than the GP2. I also like the case because it is flat and good for Velcro plus it has a standard Tripod mounting plate.
I do not like the fact the Sony cannot invert the image by itself but that can be easily done in the editor. I also wish it had some blinking lights to tell if it is recording. My GoPro Silver has 4 blinking at once! Also, the APP needs more tools and information, plus a way to record to the phone. Maybe it does, but I haven't figured that out yet. I also do not like the fact that the Very High Quality Slow and Super Slow modes do not record sound, where my GoPro 2 silver does.
Both cameras are good for sure and I hope to use them in conjunction with each other.
In fact, my next video will use footage from both since that is all I wanted was a second action camera. If the GoPro4 Gold has Steady Shot on video, that would make my day. We shall see.
The Quad copter I used is my dependable DJI Phantom, now available at NitroPlanes and XHeli.
