A 5.7 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Yilan on Thursday. The quake was shallow, with a depth of 9 kilometers. It was strongest at Yilan’s Wuta Village, measuring a lower 5 on Taiwan’s seismic intensity scale. It reached an intensity level of 4 in Hualien, New Taipei, and Taoyuan, and a level of 3 in Taipei, Hsinchu, Miaoli, Taichung, and Nantou.
The quake was followed by three shallow aftershocks of at least a 4.0 magnitude. According to seismologists, Thursday’s temblors were triggered by the collision of the Eurasian Plate and the Philippine Sea Plate, and are not related to the April 3 Hualien earthquake. More aftershocks of 4.5 magnitude or above are possible in the coming week.
