This morning's topic — “The Emerald Tablet: Could it be the world’s most powerful Legominism? Perspectives from Sufism to Gurdjieff”
The Emerald Tablet of Hermes Trismegistus is one of the most mysterious writings that we have coming down to us from antiquity. While it has many “interesting” pedigrees – with some even claiming that it comes from sunken Atlantis – the reality is no less intriguing.
This morning, we will be looking at and working with the earliest existent copy of the Tablet, found in the Arabic text “Sirr al-khalīqa wa-ṣanʿat al-ṭabīʿa” (written in the 8th century CE and attributed to Apollonius of Tyana). It’s our contention that The Emerald Tablet is a “legominism”.
Gurdjieff, writing of legominisms: "My dear and beloved Grandfather, tell me, please what does the word Legominism mean?" Hassein asked. "This word Legominism," replied Beelzebub, "is given to one of the means existing there of transmitting from generation to generation information about certain events of long-past ages, through just those three-centered beings who are thought worthy to be and who are called initiates."~ from “Beelzebub's Tales to his Grandson”
So we ask ourselves, “Does the Emerald Tablet hold objective knowledge for those who know how to access it, and if so, how do we prepare ourselves to acquire it?”
Let’s take a long look at this question and examine some of the practices used to open the secrets of the Tablet.
